Wait for Dark Bishop/Special Crimes Unit Kay Hooper Books
FINAL DECISION: This is a weird and creepy story (a good thing in this series!) but what I love best is getting more character development from Hollis and more about her relationship with Reese.THE STORY: Hollis Templeton has progressed from being a victim to now becoming a team leader for the SCU. She and her partner Reese DeMarco come to Clarity, North Carolina in order to investigate a series of deaths that appear to be accidents and yet seem like something much more sinister when the sheriff discovers that each victim received a text message stating "Wait for Dark" before their deaths. Not only is the team investigating strange crimes but Hollis's paranormal senses are continuing to evolve as she has to confront her own past as a victim.
OPINION: I really liked this one because while the focus was appropriately on the suspense story and the investigation, there was quite a bit about Hollis's own struggles. I have loved reading about Hollis's development throughout the series and this book takes her development to another level. Just a warning though -- things are not completely resolved and I expect we will get more Hollis books in the future.
What I like best about this book is that there is a real question about what is going on for a good portion of the book. That builds drama and interest. This is not a mystery book. You are not going to be able to gather suspects and evidence and find out what is happening. This story is just creepy and strange and filled with scary images and possibilities.
WORTH MENTIONING: I was glad to see Bishop and Miranda. I keep wishing for another book with the two as the focus.
CONNECTED BOOKS: WAIT FOR DARK is the seventeenth book in the Bishop/Special Crimes Unit series. This book really needs to be read in context of other books in the series to truly appreciate it. It is not necessary to read all the books in the series first, but I recommend reading TOUCHING EVIL, SENSE OF EVIL, BLOOD DREAMS, BLOOD SINS, BLOOD TIES, HAVEN, HOSTAGE, and HAUNTED first.
STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

Wait for Dark Bishop/Special Crimes Unit Kay Hooper Books Reviews
Normally I love Kay Hooper's paranormal books but in this book she did the one thing that annoys me the most. The book is set up as a mystery. People try to solve mysteries. That's a huge part of the fun of a mystery. Hooper takes that away by making the criminal be someone completely out of left field. After it is revealed in the book who the person is then a whole storyline is set up as to why it was that person, what caused them to go that route, etc. I consider that to be poor writing. However, that's just my personal opinion. If you're not into trying to figure out who the culprit is then this is a very good book. I still recommend reading it for everyone, just know that it's a "no thinking required" kind of book.
I love the Bishop/SCU series. But this one, left me with sadness. Over the course of five years the SCU team has grown, and that is to be expected, but the development of Hollis leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Her character has turned into a Mary Sue, she has no defects that really slow her down, and every time a bad guy pops up she miraculously develops a new power to fight him instantly.
Newsflash, that does not make for good reading. That I pre-ordered this, because I was so excited, only to feel like I'd wasted my money, is incredibly frustrating. She gets one more chance.
I have to preface this review by saying that I am a huge Bishop/SCU fan, and thus, am definitely biased (haha). I have followed Ms. Hooper's characters all the way from the beginning, and Wait For Dark is a wonderful addition to this amazing series. In my opinion, Wait for Dark is much better written than Fear the Dark (the novel that came before this one), though it is not my favorite SCU book (Out of the Shadows wins that contest!). In Wait for Dark, the plot was interesting, with just the right mix of psychic and non-psychic phenomenon, our secondary characters are much fleshed out and enjoyable, and the other half of the SCU team, Cullen and Kirby, actually felt like they played a meaningful part in the overall investigation. These were some of the major issues I had with the previous book, and I felt that Ms. Hooper does a much better job with these points in Wait for Dark.
Of course, Wait for Dark featured Hollis, one of the most fleshed out (and powerful) SCU characters that has had multiple "featurette" books previously. While I admit that I had thought her story didn't need to be expanded upon (seeing how she has so many abilities already), it was nice to see her and Reese interact more, and it was equally wonderful to see her be an SCU Team Leader, having gone through so much despite her relatively young age. I liked that Wait for Dark addressed most of Hollis' weaknesses but didn't make her out to be a perfect heroine by any means. Her interactions with the team members, locals, and especially Bishop, seemed very in-character and true to the Hollis we have seen grow since she was first introduced years ago.
For long-time readers of the series, you will be pleased by the references to other SCU characters and the presence of Bishop and Miranda. I loved that continuity and always enjoy getting a peek at what the other characters are up to! First time readers should still give this book a chance, though, as the story is comfortably contained and Wait for Dark can be read as a completely standalone novel. It might even peak your interest enough to take a look at the entire series, and I would recommend the series with no hesitation!
I was a bit disappointed. The protagonist was never fleshed out for me to understand or wonder about. The whole idea of how he did some of the crimes were just kinda thrown out but again not really dealt with. I liked Hollis but she seemed weak and whiny in this story. I feel like we need new blood and a new type of crime to bring life to this series or maybe the opposite! Get back to Bishop! I've always wondered about his wife's sister..... It was just an ok story for me. At times I was bored and that's not my typical reaction to the Bishop series.
