The novel takes one through a fascinating journey of five individuals as they navigate complexities of the New York life. Each individual comes from a unique background yet their fates are intertwined in fascinating ways. It should be a great read for anyone who has lived in a big city and can relate to paving one's way in this type of setting.
Beautifully written!! If you've ever lived in NYC in your 20s or even just followed an eccentric dream, this delightful novel will speak volumes to you. The writer captures the spirit of New York and those ambitious enough to fight the good fight here and he really comes out winning. I'm looking forward to the next book!
As many have already noted, Yuri's "Returns and Exchanges" novel is an exceptional read. It is written in a creative and witty style that captures the reader very early on in the novel and allows us to truly feel the lives of the characters. Overall, the style in which Yuriy wrote highly compliments the story and makes it a truly enjoyable read. I highly recommend this novel.
"Returns and Exchanges" is a gorgeously imagined, highly ambitious novel that spans 3 continents, 12 months and entire worlds of meaning within music, art and literature, plus whole diapasons of emotion - young love, parental pressure, the search for self amid disappointment and loss, outsider's ambition and the brutal and beautiful centrifuge of New York City. Gripping from the start, it follows five brilliant, driven young people through their journeys in finance and Nigeria, the glitter of cosmopolitan New York and banality of suburbia, the expansive Southwest and gritty Berlin. Yuri is a fresh and original voice influenced by the likes of Proust and Thomas Mann and Hermann Hesse. It will be a pleasure to read his next books.
While "Returns and Exchanges" is a debut novel, it certainly does not read like one. In light of his literary tenure, Mr. Kruman's ambition is lofty like F. Scott Fitzgerald in "The Great Gatsby" or Philip Roth in "American Pastoral", the young Russian-American writer wishes to paint the portrait of a generation. Much to our delight, his attempt is met with success. As their paths cross, the novel's multi-faceted characters learn the meaning of Love, Ambition, Hope, Greatness and Disappointment. The dense, rich style - Mr. Kruman possesses great facility with the English idiom, and this novel is also very much a linguistic tour-de-force - is delightful, though it is certain to only please the most discriminating (Proust-loving) readers.
It is clear that this work is written from a combination of personal experience and detailed research. The author succeeded in holding my interest throughout as I followed the variably intertwined stories of five young people from different walks of life. His use of language made for particularly enjoyable reading, and his at times bawdy style is all his own. Nabokov lovers will likely revel in this work, as will those interested in the immigrant experience, underground German nightclubs (and parties to end all parties!), symphonic creation...In the end, the novel encourages the reader in evaluating the returns and exchanges in their own lives. Thoughtful, poignant, and highly recommended!
Beautifully written, full of wit and imagery. I really enjoyed re-discovering New York through the eyes of the protagonists. A great story and a compelling read!
